Remembering Rose

Jemima Smith enslaved quite a few people and names four of them in her 1801 will when she gave them to her children.  Their names were Hager, Rose, James, and David.

Hager was given to Nancy, Rose was given to Ellen, James went to Andrew, and David to Jonathan.  The rest of the people Jemima enslaved seem to have gone to Samuel.

Rose was given to Ellen (Penelope) Merrell, the wife of Benjamin Merrell (they were first cousins), who lived in Buncombe County.  Benjamin Merrell enslaved one person on the 1800 census before he and Penelope inherited Rose.  http://www.valsamides-design.com/mccrary/boydmccrary1will.html

Benjamin enslaved two people on the 1810 census, and it is very possible that one is Rose, but there is no certainty about that. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7613/images/4433260_00149?pId=353089

He enslaved five people in 1820. Two were boys under the age of 14, one was a man aged 26-45, a girl under age 14, and a girl or woman between the ages of 14 and 26 (Rose?). https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YTT-C45?i=21&cc=1803955

In 1830, he enslaved 3 people.  One was a boy under age 10, one was a man between 36 and 55, and one was a girl under age 10. None of these could be Rose, but this accounting may not include all the people he enslaved. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/176086:8058  or https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYYJ-KNM?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXH5M-KHZ&action=view&groupId=TH-1942-25127-10412-70

Benjamin’s 1835 will gave 6 enslaved people to his children.  A man or boy named Jim went to Nimrod Merrell. A girl or woman named Mary, along with any “increase,” were given to Charity Merrell McCrary.  Mariah and her “increase” went to Rachel Merrell, Rose and her “increase” first to Penelope until she died, then to Jonathan Merrell (since she died after Emancipation, this would not have happened).  A man or boy named Ambrose went to David Merrell, and a man or boy named Dick went to Levi.
